The Leaning Tower of Pisa’s famous tilt has been a subject of concern and corrective efforts for centuries. Construction of the tower began in 1173, but the soft soil on one side caused it to start leaning during its construction. Over the years, the tilt increased to a critical angle. In the late 20th century, experts became concerned about the tower’s stability, and a series of restoration efforts were undertaken. To correct the lean, engineers carefully removed soil from the higher side of the foundation and inserted counterweights to stabilise the structure. The project was a success, and by 2001, the tower’s tilt had been reduced by approximately 43 centimetres, making it safe for visitors. The Leaning Tower of Pisa now stands as a testament to both architectural marvel and human ingenuity in preserving historic landmarks.
